Terms of Service
Last updated: September 10, 2026
The short version. Lookshelf is an app that keeps the things your AI tools make. The app is free on every platform and works without an account. If you sign in, we store your documents encrypted so they follow you between devices; if you pay, you get more room and, on Pro+, a vault only you can open.
You own everything you put in. We take only the permission needed to store it and give it back to you. You can export it or delete it whenever you like. We do our best to keep it safe, we say plainly what we cannot promise, and we will tell you before anything about this agreement changes.
1. Who we are, and what this covers
Lookshelf is made by Gigahertz LLC ("Gigahertz", "we", "us"). These Terms are the agreement between you and us for the Lookshelf apps and for Lookshelf Cloud, the optional hosted service behind sign-in, backup, sync and the Private Vault. By creating an account or using the service you accept them. If you do not agree, do not create an account — the app still works without one.
Two things, and it matters which one you are using:
- The Lookshelf app — macOS, Windows, Linux, iOS, Android and the web app at try.lookshelf.app. It is free. Without an account it keeps everything on your device (or, on the web, in your browser) and sends us nothing.
- Lookshelf Cloud — what an account adds: encrypted storage on our servers, sync between your devices, version history, export, and the Private Vault on Pro+. Cloud is what these Terms are mostly about.
2. Who can use it
- You must be at least 13 to create an account. Lookshelf is not directed at children under 13.
- You need an email address you control, or a Google or Apple account. We use the address to sign you in and to send you the emails described in the Privacy Policy — never marketing you did not ask for.
- Activity under your account is yours until you tell us it has been compromised. Keep your password, and your vault passphrase, to yourself.
3. What you get
Every feature of the app is on every plan. Plans differ in how much cloud storage you get and whether the Private Vault is included.
| Plan | Price | Cloud storage | What's included |
|---|---|---|---|
| Free | $0 | 100 MB | The whole app on every device. Cloud backup for the documents you choose. Encrypted on our servers. |
| Pro | $10 / month $5 with founder pricing | 5 GB | Everything in Free. Sync across your devices, the last 10 versions of every document, 30 days to restore anything you delete. |
| Pro+ | $20 / month $10 with founder pricing | 20 GB | Everything in Pro. The Private Vault: end-to-end encryption with a key we never hold, and a Recovery Kit. |
Founder pricing is half the regular price, locked for as long as your subscription stays active. If you cancel, you are welcome back — at the regular price. Founder pricing is offered for a limited time; the app shows whether it is still open.
4. Subscriptions and billing
- Where you pay. On the web and desktop, payment goes through Stripe Checkout. On iPhone and Android, through the App Store or Google Play. Card numbers never touch our servers.
- Renewal. Subscriptions renew monthly until you cancel.
- Cancelling. Cancel any time — in the app, in Stripe's customer portal, or in your App Store or Google Play subscriptions. It takes effect at the end of the period you have paid for, and you keep your plan until then.
- Refunds. We do not refund partial months. Purchases made through the App Store or Google Play follow Apple's and Google's refund rules, which we do not control.
- Price changes. If a regular price changes, we tell you by email at least 30 days before it applies to you. A founder price does not change while your subscription stays active.
- Downgrading. If your plan ends and you are above the free 100 MB, your cloud copies become read-only for 30 days so you can download or prune them. After that, we move the oldest documents to the trash until you fit the free quota, where they stay restorable for another 30 days. Nothing on your devices is touched.
5. What you own
Your documents are yours. Nothing here transfers any ownership to us. You grant Gigahertz only the narrow permission needed to run the service: to store your documents, encrypt them, mirror them for durability, and deliver them back to you and your signed-in devices. We claim no other right to them, and we do not train anything on them.
You are responsible for what you store. Do not use Lookshelf Cloud to keep or share material that is illegal, that infringes someone else's rights, or that contains malware. If we have to act on such material we will, and we will tell you unless the law prevents it.
6. The Private Vault
On Pro+ you can turn on the Private Vault. From then on, backups from that device are encrypted on the device with a key derived from a passphrase you choose. We store the result and nothing else.
- We cannot open it. Not to help you, not for anyone else. That is the feature.
- We cannot reset it. If you lose your passphrase, the Recovery Kit shown when you turned the vault on is the only other way in. If both are gone, the vault's contents are gone. We ask you to confirm you have saved the kit before the vault turns on, and we mean it.
- Documents backed up before the vault was turned on stay encrypted on our servers with our key, not yours, until you seal them. The app tells you how many and offers to seal them whenever the vault is unlocked.
7. Fair use
Storage is per plan and enforced; writes above your quota are refused. Lookshelf Cloud is a personal library, not a distribution network, so we apply per-account limits — including download budgets that also limit the damage a stolen token could do — and may slow accounts whose use degrades the service for everyone else. We will always tell you if we do.
8. What we promise about your data
We keep the last 10 versions of each document, keep deleted documents restorable for 30 days, encrypt everything at rest, and mirror every write to a second store that ordinary deletion never touches. These are serious, tested measures — and still commercially reasonable efforts, not a guarantee. No service can promise that data will never be lost. The app is local-first on purpose: the copy on your device is the one you control, and we recommend keeping it.
9. Ending your account
- By you. Export everything at any time from Account → Export: one encrypted archive, emailed to you, valid for 7 days. Delete your account from the same place. Deletion is immediate and is described in detail in the Privacy Policy.
- By us. We may suspend or close an account for breaking these Terms or for non-payment. Unless the situation requires immediate action, we email you first, and we give you at least 30 days to export before anything is removed — except where the law requires otherwise.
10. What we do not promise
THE SERVICE IS PROVIDED "AS IS" AND "AS AVAILABLE", WITHOUT WARRANTIES OF ANY KIND, EXPRESS OR IMPLIED, INCLUDING MERCHANTABILITY, FITNESS FOR A PARTICULAR PURPOSE AND NON-INFRINGEMENT. WE DO NOT PROMISE THAT THE SERVICE WILL BE UNINTERRUPTED OR ERROR-FREE, OR THAT DATA WILL NEVER BE LOST.
11. Limits on our liability
TO THE FULLEST EXTENT THE LAW ALLOWS, GIGAHERTZ'S TOTAL LIABILITY FOR ANYTHING ARISING FROM THE SERVICE IS LIMITED TO WHAT YOU PAID US IN THE 12 MONTHS BEFORE THE EVENT. WE ARE NOT LIABLE FOR INDIRECT, INCIDENTAL, SPECIAL, CONSEQUENTIAL OR PUNITIVE DAMAGES, OR FOR LOSS OF DATA, PROFITS OR GOODWILL. Some places do not allow some of these limits, so parts of this section may not apply to you.
12. Changes to these Terms
We may update these Terms. For anything material we notify you by email, or in the app, at least 30 days before it takes effect. Continuing to use Lookshelf Cloud after that date means you accept the change; if you do not, export your data and close your account before it. The date at the top is always the current version.
13. Governing law
These Terms are governed by the laws of [STATE], without regard to its conflict-of-law rules. Disputes will be resolved in the courts of [VENUE].
